Carer Condition Review

Introduction

The “Carer Condition Review Scale” is a self-administered questionnaire designed to help carers reflect on their caregiving stress and needs, enhance self-awareness of their won condition, and proactively seek support when necessary. Conducting regular reviews enables carers to monitor changes in their stress levels, promoting their mental and physical health well-being and fostering a healthy a balance in caregiving.

The Carer Condition Review consists of 11 items related to the physical and mental conditions of the carers, as well as their caregiving situation. The scale details are as follows:

Recalling the caregiving situation in the past week, how much do you agree with the following statements?
1.
When I have important decisions to make / need help, I feel there is no one to assist me (including family members living with me or elsewhere, friends, and other sources).
2.
The person(s) I look after show aggressive speech or behaviour (e.g., harassing others, rude, aggressive). 
3.
I often feel I lack confidence or opportunity to take care of my own physical and mental health.
4.
My health is poor, or I often have insomnia.  
5.
I feel anxious, irritable and uneasy.
6.
I am financially burdened by looking after the care recipient(s).
7.
I feel stressed with no chance to rest, (i.e., I cannot spare time for myself to rest.)
8.
I have thoughts of self-harm or harming others.
9.
I am unable to provide the necessary care needed for the person(s) I look after .
10.
I frequently have physical or verbal conflicts with the person(s) I look after.
11.
In the past 12 months, significant life changes (e.g., moving, divorce, bereavement, unemployment, retirement, serious health / emotional problems etc.) have affected my daily life and caregiving ability.

Acknowledgement

This tool aims to raise public awareness of carers’ needs. It is built upon the screening tool for carers of older adults, developed by Professor Vivian Lou of The University of Hong Kong under “The Jockey Club Carer Space Project” with expert advice from Professor Hector Tsang of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University regarding the needs of carers for people with disabilities. The mentioned project is initiated and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
